Stanley Brock


Stan Brock is a British philanthropist who founded the charity Remote Area Medical in 1985

Stanley Edward Brock was born in 1936 in Preston, Lancashire, England. He was educated at Canford School, Wimborne, Dorset. His father, a civil servant, was posted to the British Colony of Guyana. In 1952, at the age of 16, Stan dropped out of school and travelled by sea to Guyana. During the voyage he learnt of a remote cattle ranch in the Amazon Jungle; his early interest in nature and wild animals led to his first job as a Cowboy on the Dadanawa Ranch.He gained fame in the US with his work on the tv show Wild Kingdom.
RAM is funded through donations and relies on volunteer doctors, nurses, pilots and veterinarians to provide care in poorer communities and whilst initially set up to provide health care to remote parts of Central and South America, it has recently been providing free health care to the US. He has given testamont to two Senate committees.
According to a report in The Independent he:
"...has no money, no income, and no bank account. He spends 365 days a year at the charity events, sleeping on a small rolled-up mat on the floor and living on a diet made up entirely of porridge and fresh fruit."
